Mixing Up “Me” & “You”
When your child starts to speak and understand, does he/she mixed words up or get confused? Jonathan boy mixed up the “me” and “you” pronouns.
I used to say: “Come boy, Mommy carry you.”
When he wants me to carry him, he would say: “Mommy, carry you, please.”
***********
I would ask him: “Jonathan boy, Mommy make milk for you, ok?”
When he wants milk, he says: “Mommy, make milk you.” (Notice too that the “for” is missing here)
When he made this mistake, I would stare at him with a smile. He can read my expression and then corrected himself. But suprisingly he won’t get the “I” and “You” or “Me” and “I” mixed up. He knows when to use them.
Such as: “Daddy, I want egg.” and “Daddy, you want egg?”
“Give me.” and “I want.” instead of “Me want.”
I try to use nouns and names when speaking to him but often forget ’cause we are so used to using pronouns in our daily adult conversation. Nevertheless, it’s so cute sometimes when you hear the mistakes they made.
Kristie says:
Jonathan is in the midst of learning to speak in sentences, I think it will take time to learn, but anyway these kids are fast learners! 🙂 They copy exactly what we say 🙂
mc says:
yes, keira sometimes says you instead of me too. Usually “Keira feed you” when she means she wants to feed herself.
Merryn says:
At this age, anything they say sound cute 🙂 As long as they are talking, they are cute 🙂 I just love to listen to them speak.. anything! 😀
Ann says:
I agree. Sometimes I lov their mix ups.
And then one day when they all of a sudden get it. I love those too. When you realise, they are such a big boy already!
andrewjune says:
i thk it’s ok…as long we know what they meant/want and they know what we meant/want…i thk it’s ok 🙂
but we hv to correct them when they are able to understand later hehehe…
Lynette says:
Manfred always say:”you wan watch barney” when he wan to watch barney.
I think cause I always ask him, “do you want to XXX” so he also answer back using “you”.. 🙂 does sound confusing, but after I correct him, now he gets it right sometimes…
yugene says:
my boy started to know the difference now after thousand times of explanation!! 🙂
Pet says:
My daughter same too! I think…all children alike ya, and it’s the parents or guardian to guide them correctly in term of language, attitude and all!
agnes says:
yea.. same like chloe too.. confused between me & you… until forgot to correct her sometimes.. hahahahaa..
lil prince's mum says:
My son confused with ‘me’ and ‘you’ last time also… and I blogged about it…

I tried the suggestion Angeline gave and it works… Maybe you want to try, too:
Angeline said…
Sit him on your lap.
Hold his right hand in yours with the index finger pointing out.
Point to himself and say “Me”.
Point to another person or teddy bear and say “you”….
do it as and when you can, over and over again every day, till he gets it right.
the keypoint here is not for “you”, its rather for “me”. So that whenever he needs something for himself, he will say “me” and then when to say “you” becomes natural.
*wink*
rachel says:
oh…i m not at this stage yet…
everything is referring to “baby”
take for baby
baby give mama
he has not started to use you & me…ehheh
